The devs were so insistent on making each civ completely unique, so balance took a hit the civs in AoE2 are actually pretty similar, so it was much, much easier to balance out. They're both great in their own merits, but alot of people prefer AoE2 because some parts of AoE3 were pretty rushed and didn't come out so great. They had pressure from their publisher (Microsoft) to keep it in the same franchise obviously, they are a business. Any similarity between the two of them are similarities that could be attributed to pretty much any 2 RTSes on the market, such as Rise of Nations or StarCraft.Įven the creators of the game stated that they really should not have given Age of Empires 3 the name of "Age of Empires," because it was so different from the previous two. In my opinion, both games are fun but AoE2 holds my attention longer because it is more balanced, more civs, more adaptability, and more stable. A lot of people didn't like the addition of the cards either because of balance purposes again. Dutch and French usually have the upper hand based on what I have watched (my friends play AoE3 so I don't necessarily play it with them). AoE3 is very unbalanced too, despite having fewer civs. For example, the trade route? You can't build a wall or gate over it so there could be a hole in your defenses. AoE3 also has quite a few differences that were executed poorly, in my opinion. However, your question was more about human vs. Based on my own experiences, AoE2 AI will adapt to a player whereas AoE3 will continue to pump pikemen against ranged infantry. I just enjoy a 1v1 against a computer or a 2v2 with my friend against 2 comps.
